How Much Fizz is in Your Soda?

Broad Question

How much carbon dioxide is in your Mountain Dew, Coke, Pepsi and Seltzer water?

Specific Question

Is there more fizz/carbon dioxide in Mountain Dew, Pepsi, Coke or Seltzer water?

Independent Variable

Soda Brand.

Dependent Variable:

Carbon Dioxide Mass (g)

Variables That Need To Be Controlled:

The same generic brand the same storage place for the soda.

Hypothesis

I hypothesize that Mountain Dew is going to have a lot more fizz in it.

Experimental design

I will do my experiment at home. I will be taking my own measurements. I will do three trials to complete my experiment. I’m going to record my data on the data table that we made in class on the computer as I do the experiment. I think I’m going to do my experiment awhile before the science fair. The experiment will go faster if I record as it goes on. I will take measurements and put them on my wiki.

Materials List

  • 3, 2 liter Mountain Dew bottles
  • 3, 2 liters Coke’s
  • 3,2Three two liters Pepsi’s
  • 3,2 Three two liter Soda Water’s
  • 3,2 Scale

Detailed Procedure

  1. Gather materials
  2. Weigh the non-opened soda. Then record data
  3. Open the caps so the pressure goes out.
  4. Leave soda open for three days.
  5. Then I’m going to measure them again and see what the difference will be.
  6. Weigh the opened soda. Calculate the differences
  7. Repeat the procedure 3 more times

Background Research

I found out that the density of carbon dioxide is 0.00197g/bc. And that the MW (Molecolar Wieght) is 44g.
Soda was invented in the 18Th century. And the first Soda was Coka-Cola.I learned that carbon Dioxide weights less then Air. I think that will have a effect on my experiment. The original formula for Mountain Dew was invented in the 1940s. It didn’t have as much Carbon Dioxide as it does now.

Results

My Hypothesis was that Sprite would have more carbon Dioxide then the other sodas. My hypothesis supported my research the Sprite had over ten grams more than any other soda. The soda with the most mass had the most carbon dioxide. All the sodas except the seltzer water were in the . My tests went very smoothly I got them all done in time. If i could improve anything it would be using a more accurate scale. People might like less fizz in their soda or some might like more fizz.

Data Table

Data Analysis

The data did not have a trend in some of the sodas there was a drop in mass but other rose in mass. The reason the soda mite have wieght more was because carbon doixide wieghs less then air. So when he carbon Dioxide keft the bottle it gave it more mass. The place were the soda was left open was room temperature.

Conclusion

The original purpose of this experiment Was to find out How Much Carbon Dioxide is in Sprite, Coke, Cream Soda? Soda was left open for three days. After eight days the Sprite ended up with the most carbon dioxide. With 50(g), coke with 33.3333(g),tied with Cream Soda and with the least amount Seltzer Water with 8.38.
